Please look at “Your Control Panel” in the menu. Adjust your time settings and Edit your profile to include the requested information. I am now requiring that all registering users give their real names, location, practice names, and relationship to eCW. It would be great if we all had that info there, to facilitate communication. Thanks!

The moderators of the forum have declined to add specialty groups to the forum topics. We are concerned that the discussions will be become to fragmented and also that the possibilities are endless. Thank you for your understanding.

Growing Pains ... New Site bugs

Here’s some things I have noticed about the transition. Bugs which, I’m afraid, I cannot go back and fix.

1) Posts from the old site did not maintain the proper **quote** tags and it is harder to tell what was quoted from a previous post and what was new.

2) We lost our saved Private Messages. I am sorry about this one. I hope it did not mess anyone up too much.

3) You’ll notice that our overall number of members fell from about 7500 to about 1500. This was because I decided not to transfer members who have never posted or who have not posted in a long time. In doing this, however, all the users that are no longer with us were bunched together as a single user now known as “Anonymous.” In many cases, these users are identified in the body of their posts. But in some cases they are not. The user “Anonymous” now is the third most prolific poster in the history of eCWusers. This is because this is a conglomerate of many former users. Sorry.

Trying, in my not-quite-geeky-enough way…

The NEW eCWusers SITE

Welcome to our new site.

Forgive the inevitable bugs and rough edges.

There are new features, and some of the old features are gone.

First, what’s missing. We no longer have the email digests. I will miss them myself. But this is not a function of the new software. We also no longer have the individual blogs or the chat room, although these features were not used that much. The forum eCW Help Desk is no longer with us because it gave the unfair appearance of being an official eClinicalWorks Tech Support site. It was not. The company will continue to participate on the forum I am sure, but we’ll discuss topics in the proper categories and call tech support for more urgent help.

But, the forums have been reorganized to better facilitate browsing. The threads are going to be moving around a bit for a few days as we try and move old threads into new homes.

We have a new Tips and Tricks page, which will develop as a blog, accessed by our site moderators. Whenever a post is deemed to be particularly helpful (and you can hit the Report button and let us know if you think this is the case), it will be categorized and copied to the Tips and Tricks page which will, in time, become a compendium of usefulness.

And I am nervously going to try out a new section called the Bug Tracker. This should allow us a single place to report bugs, and I hope make it easier for eCW reps to follow these reports, which should be more organized and less repetitive (I hope). More on this to follow.

First things first… Go to Your Profile and Your Control Panel and update all of your information.

With the conversion, I lost a few things. I lost my list of moderators and specific user group members (e.g., the PM working group, the E&M;working group). Please PM if you were a moderator and you no longer are, or if you were a member of a specific group. Also, pm me if you’re interested in becoming a moderator.

Welcome!

FORUM MIGRATION

I am hoping to have the long-awaited new ECWUSERS.COM site up within the next couple of weeks. As such, there will be a number of changes.

Within the next couple of days, I plan to re-organize the order of the forums and sub-forums. I am going to expand the options some, to try and help make the information here more usable. As this is happening, the site might be down for an hour or two, here and there.

I will be using Expression Engine software, which should allow for several new features compared to the phpbb we’re using now, and plan on migrating all of the data that is here, so that nothing is lost. One reason for the migration is that phpbb is not as secure as it used to be and over the past few months, the spambots have found the site. I get 2 dozen registration attempts a day from users such as “HerbalViagra” and “BuyCigarettesOnline.” None of them have made it through due to my tight registration policies, but there are a number of inactive users (i.e., never activated) here that I need to delete.

I am looking into migrating active users and not bringing along old, inactive and phony users. Inevitably I will miss quite a few users. If the new site goes live and you’re not registered. Please just register again and I will activate the memberships as fast as possible.

Lastly, I mentioned the new features. I’ll go into more details soon. We should have a greatly improved site soon. I thank everyone who took the time to click on the Paypal button and donate to the site. You guys made it possible for me to hire someone to make this happen!

Forum Fundraising…want to improve eCWusers.com

I would like to redesign ecwusers. It’s starting to show its age. I use a forum software called phpbb and it desperately needs upgrades to keep with our purposes and traffic. What’s nice about phpbb is that it is free. I want to purchase a commercial forums software (ExpressionEngine.com) and hire a developer to help me get a new site ready. It would be a fresh install. The forums will be reorganized. The registration process will be improved. The profile will give us more useful information about the different members.

But I need money to do this, and to continue doing this without advertisers. I will contribute $250 to the project. I need about $1250. So I need 40 users willing to donate $25 each to help me get this done. To donate, go back to the home page and click on the Donate button at the bottom of the page.

If you have any questions, drop them here or send me a PM! Otherwise thanks for everyone’s help!

I’ve registered, now what?

After you register, I will get an email asking me to approve your account. You will be notified when this happens, and it usually happens within a couple of hours (as long as you answered all of the questions that were asked of you). Once your account is approved, please consider opening the Profile on the menu above and setting up your profile.

It is helpful if you create a signature that tells us more about yourself. If you like, add your name and location. Even if you remain anonymous, it would be helpful if you were to include the following information in your signature: user status (“shopping”, “awaiting implementation”, “user since 5/02/2004”) and specialty. By adding specialty to your profile, it makes the search function more useful for those looking for posts regarding specific fields of medicine.

Next, click on Digests and setup the email Digests function. See the next post for more information.

THANKS!

A few words about email.

If you insist on using a free, generic email address, please keep your email boxes clear. When a message bounces, which is amazingly frequent, I get a notice. And I am tired of clearing these messages from my box.

Secondly, if your email address has a spam blocker, please add ecwusers.com to your okay list. I get 3 or 4 emails a day asking me to click a link to verify who I say I am so that I can be added to someone’s spam-free list. I am no longer going to click these links.

Thanks!
